When legendary reggae singer Burning Spear sang “do you remember the days of slavery”, he had in mind the 400-year long struggle and poverty of the black man. However, there’s more than that to total the balance of sins of the Europeans. Long enough, they’ve practiced and mastered the exploitation in their homelands: it was the enslavement of the peasant class. R.U.T.A. is a project coupling the protest songs of the countrymen with a punk-rock energy.

It is priceless to hear the songs of rebellion and rage disturbing the neighbourhood of Warsaw’s most noble street and the Presidential Palace itself (however the latter is being constantly abused since the presidential plane crashed). Project R.U.T.A. comprising well-known musicians of Polish folk and punk scene delivers a sound manifesto against the exploitation of the “poor and needy”, tracing its roots to as far as 15th century.

Guests of the invite-only party in Warsaw’s CDQ club on last Saturday had a unique chance to hear a brand new incarnation of the acclaimed R.U.T.A. project. Intriguing mixture of punk rock singers, folk instruments and traditional songs of anger quickly gained popularity and turned out to be one of the most remarkable musical projects of the passing year. But what happens when you leave out the “folk instruments” part to equip the band with three proper-sounding electric guitars?

Upon the first encounter, R.U.T.A. might sound like a curious, yet exotic and hardly approachable project out of Poland. But if you listen closely you will understand why it was critically acclaimed, got rave reviews in the music magazines and eventually became a prizewinner of the renowned “Polityka Passports” award.
