Upon the first encounter, R.U.T.A. might sound like a curious, yet exotic and hardly approachable project out of Poland. But if you listen closely you will understand why it was critically acclaimed, got rave reviews in the music magazines and eventually became a prizewinner of the renowned “Polityka Passports” award.

Powerful lyrics focused on the enslavement of the peasant class couldn’t have been given a better match than a raw punk music legitimated by the originators of the Polish punk rock revolution. One might say: a misalliance... and be wrong. These are not catchy folk-punk compositions as The Pogues might have recorded, but a coarse and excruciating songs of despair.

Regardless if it’s Burning Spear’s bewail about “days of slavery”, Misty in Roots chanting to “deliver the poor and needy, out of the hands of the wicked” or R.U.T.A. shouting to throw the omnipotent priest from the pulpit - the struggle in universal and so is the stunning indifference of the ruling class.
